چکیده

The tool created here is an instructional video that demonstrates how to create models of the heavy and light chains of an antibody using pipe cleaners, and how the process of V, D, and J gene recombination functions, using the model as a visual aide. The video was created by undergraduate students, with the intended audience being other undergraduates. This type of direct peer teaching aids in education because the “teachers” in this situation greatly enhance their own knowledge through instruction, and their imparting of knowledge is often more helpful to that of another student because they are more aware of comprehension gaps within their peer groups. As such, the supplementary goal of the model is to have students follow along with the video by creating and using their own models, thereby gaining a deeper knowledge of the process with a more thorough interaction. Using a video in combination with a hands-on model that a student can create on his or her own time allows kinesthetic and visual learners to succeed in a classroom setting where lectures are often tailored to suit auditory learners. Although this study tool was tested in an undergraduate Immunology class, instructional videos and models can be used in many different settings in order to enhance lectures on a variety of topics. The material presented in the video was adapted from Janeway’s Immunobiology (1). When the video was posted on YouTube.com, it became clear that peer teaching is filling a void in comprehension for students. In five months, the video has been sought out by more than 2500 people. This shows that video sharing websites are an excellent way to make information accessible, and such sites aid in education. Allowing students to make videos and models for their peers with the support of professors can exponentially increase the number of ways learning can be absorbed worldwide. PROCEDURE

Chloride ion ingress is one of the major problems that affect the durability of reinforced concrete structures such as bridge decks, concrete pavements, and other structures exposed to harsh saline environments. Therefore, durability based design of concrete structures in marine areas has gained great significance in recent decades and various mathematical models for estimating the service life...

A Visual Approach to Teaching Formal Access Models in Security

Formal models are important in information security education. The ability to abstract security concepts and apply formal reasoning techniques provides a basis for students to understand fundamental results and have a broader perspective on security issues. Our experience at the undergraduate level is that students often struggle with the abstract models, how to apply them, and the associated i...

Visually Grounded and Textual Semantic Models Differentially Decode Brain Activity Associated with Concrete and Abstract Nouns

Important advances have recently been made using computational semantic models to decode brain activity patterns associated with concepts; however, this work has almost exclusively focused on concrete nouns. How well these models extend to decoding abstract nouns is largely unknown. We address this question by applying state-of-the-art computational models to decode functional Magnetic Resonanc...

Learning Abstract Concepts from Multi-Modal Data: Since You Probably Can’t See What I Mean

Models that acquire semantic representations from both linguistic and perceptual input outperform linguistic-only models on various NLP tasks. However, this superiority has only been established when learning concrete concepts, which are usually domain specific and also comparatively rare in everyday language. We extend the scope to more widely applicable abstract representations, and present a...

A Quantitative Empirical Analysis of the Abstract/Concrete Distinction

This study presents original evidence that abstract and concrete concepts are organized and represented differently in the mind, based on analyses of thousands of concepts in publicly available data sets and computational resources. First, we show that abstract and concrete concepts have differing patterns of association with other concepts. Second, we test recent hypotheses that abstract conce...
